Symbols
2) Icons are very important in media texts because they allow the audience to see the literal sign. Its the physical resemblance to the signified and is the thing that is represented- for example in a Nike advert for trainers, the icon would be the trainers that are on sale.
Additionally, indexes are very important in media texts because it provides evidence of what's being represented, so for example is there is a fire, you would use an image of smoke to signify this. Therefore it implies another object or event.
3) Symbols are usually images that look attractive and catch the eye of audiences. Global brands may try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing because they don't want the audiences focus to shift from their products. In order to keep the audience focused on their products they need to only advertise and market these things.

In this media text we can see that this advert is advertising and promoting a dentist in an abroad country. However, they may not have realised that the logo they have used can be interpreted in a wrong way. Therefore, they have failed their advertising as the viewers and audiences would get the wrong idea about this dentist.

In this media text we can see that this advert is promoting Heineken Beer- a well known drink. The reason why this advert is successful is because it is straight to the point. It gives the audience what they are looking for. The use of the icon ( the image of the drink) is very usefully used as it is the literal image of what is being sold, so the audience knows what exactly they are going to buy or is being sold. Additionally, the use of the index ( the glass with the drink) is deliberate as it looks attractive and persuades the target audience to buy this product. However, we can see how this advert doesn't use a symbol. If they had, most likely it would have been a man drinking the product and this would have been distracting. Ultimately, they have left this out because they want to have all the focus on the product they are selling- Beer.
