Feminism:blog tasks

Media Magazine reading 1) The article focuses on two texts, these are: Pan Am and Beyoncé. 2) Pan Am - They also have a magazine cover which is heavily mediated which has a purpose to be visually enjoyed by men. There is also a scene at the end where there is a close up of the 4 women's legs. This causes the men to turn around and stare, which suggests that they enjoy and get pleasure out of seeing the females walk, their appearance and generally their bodies. Beyoncé - She playfully gazes at the camera providing the audience with knowing winks in the 'sexy outfits'. Also, at one point she is openly rubbing her chest and body, whilst playfully looking down the camera, clearly submitting herself to sexual objectification and openly acknowledging the 'male gaze'. However, she is controlling the gaze which empowers her. 3) I believe sexism still exists because women everyday are being measured against the stereotypes - attractive, dependent, inferior

January assessment learner response

1) 26/35, Grade B. WWW : Very good revision of the main theories and clear writing. LR: Flesh of theories with specific examples of texts from the media. 2) Q1 : How diversification allows companies to embrace new technology and find new revenue     streams.    Q2 : An against argument- Younger viewer don't really watch live TV in the same way as older  generations. Netflix and Amazon Prime will dominate TV market eventually.     Q3 : Moral panic and technopanics. 3) On a scale of 1(low)-10(high) I would rate my revision at 6/7. This is because I didn't fully concentrate when I was meant to be revising and didn't revise at all in the holidays so I wasn't fully prepared. 4) For question 1, I got 5/6. I managed to write about 3 different strategies, however I only wrote about 2 benefits because I ran out of time. 5) For question 2, I got 6/9. I did write about the BBC and commercial broadcaster like ITV and Channel 4. I could have added more disadvantages

Introduction to feminism- Media Magazine MM55: The Fourth Wave?

1) Networked feminism aims to tackle social equality issues found both on, using, modern technology. There have been campaigns, blogs and hashtags used. Ideologies and communities have come back through the roots of the internet. Twitter is a large contributing social networking site used- #WomenAgainstFeminism and #YesAllWomen . It is a problem because there is new technology and social media platforms. In the media feminists are still seen as campaigners, like the Suffragettes , who tied themselves to rails etc. One complication is that it is only partially understood due to ideologies becoming blurred. They are still characterized as 'man-haters'. 2) The Four Waves of Feminism : First wave : early 20th century, suffragette movement (right to vote) Second wave :1960s-1990s, reproductive rights (pill), abortion, equal pay. Third wave :1990s-present, empowerment, reclaiming of femininity (high heels, sexuality etc.) Fourth wave ?:2010-ongoing, use of new technolog

Introduction to feminism:Case study- Everyday Sexism

1) Laura Bates started the Everyday Sexism project because she realised that it was a recurring issue in her and almost every other women's life. Until speaking out about her experiences with others about the sexual harassment she gets, Laura thought it was normal due to everyone shutting her down and saying that women are equal now. However, she researched and found information that contrasts with the statement of 'women being equal' and decided to make website which enables people, men and women, from around the world to share their experiences. 2) The project links to the concept of post-feminism because it unveils the different forms of sexual harassment women get on a daily basis and how they experience this during a normal days routine, e.g. at their workplace or on their way home. In Western societies things are still developing and they still live in patriarchy. So feminism is needed in order for women to have equal rights and allow their voices to bei

Representation Theory

1) Representation is an important concept in media studies. This is because the word representation holds a clue to its importance. When we see a person, place, object or idea represented in the media text, it has in some way been mediated by the very act of representation. The media stands between the object and what we see. 2)The photograph of Kate Middleton has been manipulated with by the media, it is a re-presentation of what she really looks like. The media can take advantage of her pose and present this to the audience in a certain way, as they are able to manipulate and change the angle, lighting and timing of the pose to present a different view to the audience, it is also heavily edited . In the first image, the media presents her in an inaccurate way, as it portrays her as negative , whereas in the second image she looks respectful. 3)All media products have a specific function which will impact on the representations they construct . Producers will conside

Representation-an introduction

1) Men Women Teenagers Girls Americans 2) This trailer shows a dominant representation of men. This is because the girls father has a comic role of looking out and being protective of his daughter and by having control of the situation. Additionally, it's men who have the role of being brave and strong, the hero . Also, the men who have kidnapped the daughter are a dominant representation because it shows how it's men who have power and are superior. Women are also a dominant representation . We can see how the girls mother is helpless as she doesn't know what to do, we can see how she is more emotional and feels weaker, this reinforces the stereotype of women as inferior than men. We can see that there is a dominant representation of the girl/teenager. This stereotype is reinforced because we can see how the teenager is independent and not listening to her parents, but she is vulnerable when she sees the men. 3) The stereotype of women being the weak

Nike The Nike brand is very clever as it comes across as being culturally  diverse and friendly, when in fact it is a global business which makes huge profits. Its brand values would be about quality, lifestyle and bringing about change. Nike could fit in with several of Dyer's lines of appeal: successful careers, rich and luxurious lifestyle as Nike is well established, elite people or experts due to Nike involved with sports, self-importance and pride and culture. Additionally, Nike's mission statement is to "bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world" This further implicates that Nike regards itself as a culturally diverse brand and inclusive of all kinds. The Nike brand is about being seen globally as diverse. Change/Inspiration Facebook Facebook is a free social networking site , which allows people to be connected to others from all around the world, for different purposes, such as work or just socialising. Industries- Public Service Broadcasting
